Bat Straw Rockets are fun to explore! Children get an opportunity to apply the concepts of lift and thrust as they help the bat fly. The lift will be controlled by how they angle the bat straw rocket. The thrust will be provided by the air your child blows through the straw.

Getting the Bat Straw Rocket Set
The STEM activity is a PDF. When you download it, you will need to open it with a PDF reader. Acrobat Reader is a popular reader that you can download to use. You probably have it on your computer already.
Gathering the Supplies
This activity will need the following supplies:
- Bat Picture
- Large Straw
- Drinking Draw
- Tape
- Scissors
- Measuring Tape and/or Yardstick
Putting the Straw Rocket Together
- Children will need to cut off a piece of the large straw about 2 and a half inches long. They will need to tape one end of the straw closed.
- Then they will need to cut out their bat picture.
- Next they can be glued or taped to the section of the large straw. The feet of the bat should be facing the taped end of the straw.
- Finally, the bat picture on the straw will need to be placed on the smaller straw.
How Far Will the Bat Fly
While some children will just need to measure the distance their bat flies with a 12-inch ruler. Most children will need to use a yard stick or measuring tape to measure how far their bat has flown.
After each flight, children will want to think about what they just did. Then they can think about what they want to do differently. They may want to tilt the straw up more or aim for a specific spot. They will also want to think about how hard or softly they want to blow the rocket.
The location you are using to fly is important to think about. Our rockets have flown further outside.
